The dos-à-dos book form means "back to back" in French. This structure visually represents opposition, dialog or duality. The dos-à-dos is a wonderful way to organize information and have students engage with it creatively. In this workshop, participants will create 3 dos-à-dos books to use with different grade and skill levels as well as engage in methods on the use of this book in the classroom. Instructor: Cheryl Ball, ILSP Specialist & Co-founder of Book Arts Roadshow (FREE. Pre-registration required. Contact us for registration details.)

Thursday, October 17, 2019 - (4:30 PM to 7:30 PM) - A Professional Development Workshop: Making Books in the Classroom - Book Arts Roadshow returns to Contemporary Jewish Museum to offer teachers and school administrators an introduction to book arts, hands-on bookmaking activities, and inspiration to spark bookmaking ideas in the classroom. This is an excellent primer for the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition which promotes the art and craft of original bookmaking in the classroom, and invites students in grades K–12 in the San Francisco Unified School District to design, write, and create their own books. Books are honored, showcased, and celebrated! Instructors: Cheryl Ball & C.K.Itamura Co-founders of Book Arts Roadshow (Registration details to be announced. Watch this space or contact Contemporary Jewish Museum for details.)

ABOUT

Book Arts Roadshow was co-founded by Cheryl Ball & C.K.Itamura to provide Book Arts instruction to and hands-on learning experiences for children, teens & grown-ups in your own space. Book Arts Roadshow is on-the-go!

Cheryl Ball, Co-Founder is a native San Franciscan who has always loved books and paper. Cheryl has taken Master Classes in bookbinding with Dominic Riley and Michael Burke, and has completed the Bookbinding Certification at the San Francisco Center for the Book. She brought her love of bookmaking to her former position at a San Francisco Public Elementary-Middle School as their Art Coordinator and now, every year there, the students create original story filled bound books. Cheryl is currently the Administration Coordinator at the San Francisco Center for the Book and an ILSP Apprentice with the Alameda County Office of Education.

C.K.Itamura, Co-Founder is an autodidactic interdisciplinary artist, designer and producer. Her work blurs the lines between mediums as she combines tangible materials, sensory prompts, book arts, photography, language, time and space to create visual work, participatory projects and conceptual installations. C.K. is an Artist-in-Residence of In Cahoots Residency, an Artist-In-Residence Alumna of Chalk Hill Artist Residency, an artist member of The Center for Book Arts, a former director of San Francisco Center for the Book, and a board member of Healdsburg Center for the Arts. She has created numerous hands-on learning experiences for the Contemporary Jewish Museum and other arts organizations around the Bay Area.
